Born on August 1, 1819 in New York City, Herman Melville wrote the classic masterpiece Moby Dick published in 1851. The epic tale of the white whale and Captain Ahab was not popular until many years later.

A prolific writer and poet who often wrote about his sea voyages, Melville penned several notable classic books, including Typee, Omou, Sailor, The Confidence – man and Billy Budd, which was published posthumously in 1924.
Melville died in 1891 at the age of 72. Today, he is widely considered one of the great American writers.
